Dropbox is an online file-hosting service which offers you 2GB for free. It’s different from services such as Rapidshare in which it monitors its own folder on your computer and uploads a copy to the online storage, which you can download or view from another location as well.

As such, you can use it as an online back-up service and synchronise files between devices. It uses software which runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, as well as portable devices such as iPhones, iPads, BlackBerrys and Android phones and tablets. A full list of features can be found on this page.

I’ve been using Dropbox for more than a year, and it has saved me in more than one occasion when my laptop hard-drives have crashed or I needed to keep multiple copies of files across my devices. If you guys decide to join, please use my referrer link so we both can get an increased storage capacity of more than 2GBs!

ADDENDUM: Coincidentally, it seems that The Brunei Times also ran a piece on Dropbox on page B11 of its 6th April 2011 edition of the newspaper, with much more detail.
